Mark Hinault’s harrowing journey of self-destruction and survival begins idealistically enough. He’s an early thirties at-home web developer, and he’s also that guy; the wanna-be pro cyclist who owns six carbon bikes and collects pro gear. You gotta have top-of-the-line stuff if you’re serious. And Mark is seriously desperate to change his life after five years of sober living and no relationships. His obsession to conquer Grant’s Pass will prove he’s ready to enter the big Double Mountain race, ready to hook up with his soul mate, leave the wreckage of alcoholism behind, and it will surely cure his chronic asthma. But there’s something out there in the pre-dawn darkness. A spectral apparition that snatches roadkill off the asphalt in Mark’s headlight. A shadow of a man that chases him down the highway. And back home, the demonic apparition digs into his dreams and disrupts his reality. Still, Mark can’t stop. What was once determination is now obsession. If he can’t survive the ordeal, he won’t survive his own life.

The Eidolons Patrick W Hatten 9781521006689 Books Reviews

I liked it. Short, fast, sometimes funny sometimes creepy. You get caught up because the characters are real and their lives matter. I hope it gets made into a movie.
This is an excellent read. Thought provoking, exciting, and scary. I believed in the lead character and wanted him to succeed. The part of the book I liked the best was never really being sure if the monster is real or just something dreamed up due to asthma attacks and lack of oxygen. The last ride up the mountain and the epic struggle that ensues really captivated me. In the end I realized that it really did not matter whether the monster was real or imagined, because it was real to the lead character. I could see this story being spun into a full-length novel or feature film.
This is a screenplay in which subtext, dialogue, and characters are the most important features. The main character's OCD tics and life of quiet desperation are well delineated and believable. The third act really grips your guts. My main complaint is it's too short, but I guess that leaves lots of room for a filmmaker to expand the atmosphere and tone. Reminded me of Polanski's Repulsion, one of my favorite psychological thrillers.
Mark is a serious biker. He's up long before daylight to take a ride up a mountain that would defy most. But Mark is committed to the task. He has a top of the line bike and the best gear. He's changed his life, one of substance abuse, for a healthier alternative that has it's own thrills, though, as it turns out, not always the kind Mark imagined. Perhaps to escape the temptations of the past he has thrown himself into biking compulsively. All is well until one morning in the dim half light before dawn he encounters something. What was it? A man? A large cat of some kind? Who or what would be lurking on the road at this hour? Before he can determine what it is it's gone. He wants to forget the incident, but it haunts him. He can't quite let go of it. Is this due to his propensity to obsession? Or is it something more? He might be willing to dismiss the whole thing, but then a neighbor in his apartment building is frightened by someone inside the building. Mark comes to help, with chain in hand. What is it? An animal, a raccoon perhaps? No, she says, it was bigger, closer to human size. Mark is unable to find anything. Again, whatever it was has disappeared. Why are these apparitions intervening in Mark's life just when he was making such progress. How real are they? Where will this new series of events lead? The only way to find out is to read the book and take the ride – a biker in the darkness on the edge of dawn and something frighteningly unknown in the shadows.

Patrick Hatten summons his potent skills as a writer of myth and speculative fiction to create a screenplay that begs to be realized on the screen. Drawing on his deep and empathetic understanding of myth, he draws us into a contemporary world beset with contemporary delights and challenges and then opens the door to what lies just on the other other side of the paper thin veil that lies between our comfortable, familiar world and something other. Something that has the potential to alter our perception of reality forever.

The Eidolons (a finalist in the 2017 13Horror Film & Screenplay contest) is a fine, quick read by a master storyteller who has the ability to take us beyond ourselves into a world of his own invention that resonates with our own lives as well as those things that forever reside in the realm of mystery and imagination. I can't wait to see the movie.
